Bee Hat Apartments
1021 Washington Avenue
Bee Hat Building : 1890
Developer Matt Burghoff has purchased the seven-story Bee Hat Building for an estimated $2.3 million. Burghoff is planning
a $2.3 million renovation of the building into boutique apartments. 36 one- and two-bedroom apartments are to be built on
floors two through seven with parking being built into the basement. The apartments will have restored wood beam and plank
ceilings and range from 900 sq. ft. to 1,350 sq. ft. Rents are planned to range between $1,000 to $1,400 per month. An
Irish bistro, a women's clothing store and another retail space are planned for the first floor. The ornate brick and terra
cotta building was designed by noted architect Isaac Taylor and built in the late 1890s. The terra cotta lions heads on the
buildings' exterior will be connected to existing steam lines, allowing the lions to "roar" every hour or so once the
project is completed.
